[Camel Toed] The Abigails – Songs of Love & Despair

31 07 2012

The cliché goes that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. But to the scarred eye and blasted ear, this is a fatalistic expression. That said, I require no further introduction to the failure of The Abigails’ debut release “Songs of Love and Despair.” Not only is the title of their first album just a syllable short of “Songs of Love and Hate,” the name of Leonard Cohen’s third record release in 1971, but the mood, melody and tone is a cheap regurgitation of what has already been better done. It appears that their true call to fame is the off-the-stage antics and addictions of Warren, their singer (ex-bongo player of The Growlers [whoopdee fucking do]). And while I do not dispute his alcoholism or habit, though I do think it’s cute he wears it on his sleeve, I do believe that true artists and musicians, even the tortured ones, do not use their horror as a crutch to popularity. I’m sure that Warren’s “Love and Despair” will get him Vice and LA Record points. I, however, am not convinced.

Good thing no body cares what the fuck you think. Sick of all these idiot boring goodie-goods weighing in on shit by evoking the shocking unpopular stances of setting yourself against Vice or LA Record when much better writers with better tastes have already done that shit. You’re a gross parody of your own scene, born lame clueless and will most definitely die that way. Go listen to fucking Summer Twin or Sea Pony or some shit, go drink your milk.
